On Sunday 12th of December, 2010, we had our Community Christmas Party. What a fun-packed and jam-packed two hours! The quiz was fun and a great ice-breaker, the children’s performance tickled, the students’ sketch was not Faulty-less and hilarious, the coffee tasted great, the mulled wine went down a treat, and the carol singing was a triumph!

Thank you to all who took part in making go so well!

With the help of Colin, Rupert and Chris we have looked at something of our story – where we have come from, our vision – where we hope to be heading, and our activities – what goes on, who’s responsible and how to get involved. Highlights were Colin’s story-telling, Rupert’s ‘I have a dream…’ speech and Chris’ powerpoint, cheesecake and coffee, candlelit discussions and a chance to make new friends. Altogether it has been a magnificent three evenings and if you are kicking yourself for missing out then put a marker in March when we hope to offer them again.

- Experience different ways of praying (stillness, silent waiting, praying with scripture, imaginative contemplation and prayer of review).
- Explore aids to prayer and reflection including journaling, artwork, body awareness, music and use of images.
- Develop and deepen awareness of different perceptions of God and self.
- Discover a way of making prayerful choices.

The Growth in Prayer and reflective living course begins again this October and ends shortly after Easter. It is facilitated by the Epiphany Group who helped with our Advent Retreat in Daily Life last year. Sessions are held on Tuesday evenings 7.30 – 9.30pm at Christchurch Centre, 6a Morningside Road. See leaflet for details and application form. For personal comments see Anne Henderson, Mags Bryan, Andrew Hook who have each been on this course and recommend it.

Do you compost veg peelings and garden waste? If so, then a mix of 50% “green” nitrogen-rich garden material and 50% “brown” carbon-rich paper/ cardboard is ideal for your heap. Better still, the paper towels that CCE uses to dry hands with make perfect brown material – and they even come pre-scrunched to introduce air into your heap! If you would like to take a bag home with you for your compost, then they can be found at the office table, please help yourself on a Sunday.

Hey everyone,

Sorry for the delay in sending out an update, time seems to have really flown by these past few weeks and hard to believe we’ve only got just over two weeks left here at the hospital in Kapsowar. It has been a special time out here this past month and we feel like we’re really starting to feel so much more at home here now. There is a good community where we live and has been great to share so much of our experiences of life out here with the other doctors, students and new friends over meals and Chai (tea) in our house, which has become a bit of a base for the short-term volunteers and elective students.

Day to day life is a real mixture. Naomi divides her time between the wards, out-patients and theatre, spending much of the day with either of the two Kenyan doctors based at the hospital and has been able to assist in several C-Sections this past couple of weeks. I’ve also had some great opportunities to get into theatre too and get a birds eye view of some of the more tough surgery here though life for me is generally a mixture of finishing up my university work, doing some filming/hospital website, generally repairing computer equipment for the medical staff and the local church and doing a little bit of teaching for a couple of local boys in the afternoons.

The hospital sees a wide variety of patients with anything from snake bites to severe 70% (4th degree) burns. Though it has been sad to follow a couple of patients this past fortnight through a number of surgeries who haven’t made it through because of the severity of their injuries. And it’s difficult sometimes not to wonder too whether or not with more advanced medicine, equipment and sometimes even the availability of blood some patients might have made it if they were being treated back home. But the work of the hospital is so valuable to this community, they say it serves over 1/4 million people, it’s hard to believe there is only one full-time surgeon here.

We’ve managed to have some spectacular adventures at the weekends too and being on the edge of The Great Rift valley sets an impressive backdrop to most of the exploring we do. On Saturday we found ourselves on the valley floor, having descended 5,000 feet on foot from the hospital searching for some crocodiles. Unfortunately the rainy season hasn’t really materialised yet, which is a bit worrying generally and possibly the reason that we were unable to track down the reptiles. Very few of our little expedition group on Saturday will probably forget the climb back up last night (in the dark)!

So that’s us. I think we’re both already feeling a bit sad that we’ll be leaving soon, though the prospect of a safari during the migration when we head back through Nairobi on our way home is pretty exciting.

Much love to you all.
Luke & Naomi

Also needed are dressings (these do not need to be in-date). Additionally, if you have any old mobiles lying around that you no longer need, and are unlocked, they would be a benefit to many too.

Please hand them in a bag with a note marking clearly what they are for, to John in the CCE Office, or on Sunday.

Brian and Marion Donaldson have been sharing with us their passion for welcoming and hospitality for some time now. As part of our welcome we have now created a dedicated area for visitors and those that are new among us.

It’s has a cafe style feel to it with the intention to create a place where people can relax and find their own way into community. Please leave this area free for welcoming visitors, and as always be on the look out for new people.
