A 3 week Alpha course taster!

In an informal setting (dinner at someone’s flat), we’re going to provide an opportunity for friends that we have who may be asking questions or you think may be interested in learning more about faith, to hear about and explore what it is that we believe and the impact this has on our lives.

The Southside Association is a community council, who meet regularly to discuss matters local to the King’s Hall.

Colin Symes was along at their meeting on Tuesday 2nd March and picked up the following items for information and prayer;

1) New Safer Neighbourhood Teams are replacing the local community police network in Edinburgh’s Southside from March 1st. Covering a wider area (South Bridge to Cameron Toll), the new team of six or seven will be working with the local community to bring down the crime rate. PC Ben Merrick, formerly the Southside’s community policeman, now part of the new team, explained that Southside is something of a crime hotspot, with 50% of crime dealt with by St Leonard’s Police Station (near King’s Hall) occurring in the Southside ward. A problem particularly drawing police attention is on-street drug-dealing (people come from across town to trade here), so if you see anything suspicious or are worried, give St Leonard’s a ring on 662 5000.

Next Wednesday March 10th an Inspector from Lothian and Borders Police will be speaking at the Southside Community Council at Nelson Hall, Bernard Terrace (starts 7pm), about the new teams and anyone is welcome to go along and listen to his presentation.

2) One of Southside’s City Councillors Gordon Mackenzie was explaining to Southsiders about up-coming budget cuts of £91 million to Edinburgh City Council’s budget. There are some unwelcome consequences, particularly to local facilities, with the Number Shop in Pleasance, which has been helping adults with numeracy issues, having to close. Also, elderly folks are being hit with higher home-help charges, higher rents for those in council accommodation such as Dumbiedykes, and new charges for garden maintenance of £75 a year. The financial pinch may only just be beginning to be felt, since after the election in May further cuts are expected. The Southside Association itself has also been hit with its annual grant of £600 being cut completely, meaning it must fundraise for regular outgoings.

3) A speaker from Lothian and Borders Fire Service, Ken McKenzie, gave a talk on the dangers of house fire, and reminded everyone to check their smoke alarms are working. Also, he urged the audience to have a fire-plan to exit the property in the event of a fire. Often this key process is left out, leaving people panicking in the event of an emergency. Fire Service representatives are anxious to call and talk to folks in their homes about fire prevention, and install modern ten-year batteried smoke alarms for free; just call 0800 169 0320

For Prayer

So, in view of the above, please be praying
- for the new Safer Neighbourhood Team on the Southside
- for elderly residents of the Southside who are finding higher costs a challenge
- for greater effectiveness of the local police in combating the evil of drug-dealing on the streets
- for the safety of local firefighters based at Tollcross and Liberton stations, as they intervene in life-threatening situations
- for the success of the Fire Brigade in helping people prevent house fires in their homes.

Churches have been praying 24/7, and CCE are going to be a part of this! We are committing to pray 24/7 for 1 week starting 9am Sunday 14th March and are encouraging everyone in the church to sign up for at least one hour-long slot during this time. For more information about 24/7 (or to watch their amazing video) see
On Sunday 28th February Colin took us on into the journey through the Scriptures, from Joseph to Moses and the Exodus. This covered a span from Genesis 37 to Exodus 40, (obviously not in detail!) However, to see notes on these Scriptures and to follow through more closely, Colin has prepared more detailed daily notes which you can find on the CCE website at http://www.cce.uk.net/what-we-do/sundays/sermons/the-story/

Rather than spending time away from the realities of daily living, retreatants bring these into the retreat experience, praying with them and looking for connections between faith, prayer and everyday life. Starts and ends with a whole group meeting (Sunday 21st February 3.30pm and Saturday 27th Feb 3.30pm). In between retreatant and guide meet up every day in that week at a location and time to be mutually agreed. Suggested donation is £30. Well recommended.
