'Dark
Lochnagar' by Lord Byron
Yet, Caledonia, beloved are thy mountains
Round their white summits though elements war
Though cataracts foam 'stead of smooth-flowing fountains
I sigh for the valley of Dark Loch na Garr
|
Situated
in the royal estate of Balmoral, Lochnagar is a majestic mountain,
undoubtedly the finest in the Mounth. Its most splendid feature
is the great north-east corrie with its 200-metre high cliffs
overlooking the little loch which gives the mountain its name.
South-westwards from the summit, the wide Mounth plateau stretches
far away to the rounded dome of Glas Maol and the deep indentations
of the Angus glens. Such is its height and commanding appearance
that Lochnagar completely dominates the landscape of Deeside.
With it being a fairly long drive (3hrs) if the forecast is
poor on the Friday night we'll climb an alternative in Glencoe
- probably Buachaille Etive Beag. (Courtesy Scottish Mountaineering
Club)

you a driver. If you'd like to come and are willing to provide
a lift to those without transport please let me know the number
of spaces you have. Those without transport will be assigned
a driver and will need to arrange with the driver where and
when to meet. It is the responsibility of those wanting a lift
to contact the driver - contact details will be provided. Cost:
£5 each - payable to driver to contribute to fuel cost.
The weather conditions in the mountains in January can be bitterly
cold with snow and ice. It's essential to have plenty of warm
clothes, a hat and gloves. The walk is open to all ages and
levels of expertise; however, a moderate level of fitness is
appropriate for this walk. It goes without saying that the fitter
you are the more you're likely to enjoy the walk.
Children under the age of 16 years must be either accompanied
by an adult or have a signed consent form - Please see me for
these as I can print one off for you.
