Southside Update…

Posted on October 4th, 2009 by john.muirhead in Events

For prayer and information, Colin was along at the Southside Association on southsideTuesday evening (6th October 2009), and gleaned some facts for us to be aware of:

1)     The old Odeon cinema in Clerk Street has been empty for a long time. The owners, Duddingston House properties did have a buyer who received planning permission from the council to convert it into a hotel/restaurant complex, but Historic Scotland objected (it’s a listed building) and the Scottish Government ordered an inquiry into the plans, which is still to report. At the moment, it is deteriorating, and is a bit of a local eyesore. Pray for a good outcome to this process.

2)     Vandalism and graffiti is an ongoing worry, particularly for long-time residents of the Southside. Pray both for lessened damage to property and for good and creative outlets for the young folk who are defacing property.

3)     There is a third Causey workshop on Saturday 17 October to look at ways in which the space at the west end of West Crosscauseway (just in front of Buccleuch-Greyfriars free church in Buccleuch St) could be turned something more attractive. Colin was along at the last one, which was really interesting. If you are interested in going, there is a download attached below with info and an application form. It’s a great way of working to improve the locality.

4)     For your diary, the St Patrick’s Square Christmas tree lights switch-on will be at 6pm on Tuesday December 1st . There will be carols, accompanied by the Salvation Army band from Pleasance, and Rev Fred Tomlinson from St Peter’s will be leading in prayer. There are refreshments after in the Southside Community Centre. Hopefully a few of us can make it along.
