Southside Community Council Feedback
Southside Community Council Feedback 13th April 2011
Colin Symes writes;
At the meeting on Wednesday evening 13th April, some items were raised which may be of interest to the CCE family.
- The police advised us that there has been a spate of housebreakings in the area, and advised people to be extra-vigilant.
- Concerns were expressed about cyclists emerging from and entering the Innocent Railway tunnel through the East Parkside estate after dark, without lights. Police confirmed that cyclists must carry lights at night, front and rear, in all public places, even on cycle paths, which are shared with pedestrians.
- The police thanked the public for help leading to the successful raiding of a house in Dumbiedykes connected with the supply of drugs. They are always happy to hear of any leads people can give them.
- A successful evening was held on April 2nd at St Patrick Square showing the open-air film ‘Local Hero’, ending with fireworks, organised by the Community Council, in support of the saving of the Odeon Cinema building. There is good local and city support for the building being re-opened for community use, and one of the bidders is the Rock Elim church, who are looking to return it to use as a cinema and also for meeting space. At the event in St Patrick Square
Historic Scotland have expressed that they do not wish to see the building, which is listed, demolished.
- A number of trees have been lost from the East Meadows due to disease. The council does not have a budget to replace them, but suggestions were made at the community council for possible sponsorship of trees as memorials or gifts to the community. To plant and plaque a cherry tree in the Meadows costs in the region of £450. Anyone interested can contact the council to offer to sponsor a tree.
